Before the rooftops, there was a railroad.
A brief history of New Caney, Texas, from Presswood to a growing Houston-area community.

Roots in the 1860s
The Texas State Historical Association traces the settlement to the 1860s, when it was known as Presswood. Early families farmed and raised cattle in the area.
A new connection
Rail service arrived in the late 1870s, connecting local agricultural and timber activity with wider markets. The station took its name from Caney Creek.
How New Caney got its name
A post office opened in 1882. Because the name Caney was already used by another Texas town, the postal name became New Caney. The area’s story continued through lumber production and, later, growth connected to metropolitan Houston.
Read the landscape
Today’s retail districts and new-home developments sit within a much older local story. When comparing homes, it helps to recognize the difference between established subdivisions, new master-planned sections and the broader unincorporated community.
